2015 goals

So… I realize that I getting my ‘new year’s resolutions’ up on Jan 22nd sort of makes me an immediate failure in the resolutions department, but I’ve decided not to do actual resolutions this year. Instead, I’m aiming for goals. I also figure that since I usually start my resolutions at full force on Jan 1, only to be completely exhausted and fed up by Feb 4, I’m not being strict about implementation. A lot of goal-making advice revolves around setting specific, achievable goals so that you can track progress, but for me, that usually just ends up bumming me out when I fall of the motivation wagon.

This time around, I’m being nice to myself (what a radical thought!). I think it’s important to identify what changes you’d like to make in your life, and what things you want to accomplish, but I am NOT a fan of feeling bad when I don’t perfectly realize each goal. Thus, I am rolling out my goals for 2015; the things that I would like to do, but understand that it won’t be the end of the world should some of these go by unnoticed. Enjoy!

1. Journal
I’ve kept a diary for most of my life, but sometime during high-school my musings morphed from ‘this is what I did today’, to ‘these are all the things that suck today’. After much personal growth last year, I think it’s about time I started writing down some of the good things that happen to me (and there are plenty!), so I can one day look back and think, ‘Huh, I had it pretty good in 2015!’.

2. Say YES!
Full disclosure: I may have watched Yes Man on the plane home (Iceland Air always plays movies from a few years ago, something I secretly love). While the movie is silly and a little ridiculous (and hilarious!), it bears an important message. How many times have I opted out of new opportunities, seeing friends, going out, etc., because I was tired, lazy, or not in the mood? Too many. This year, I want to say say yes to things where my knee-jerk reaction is to decline, thus forcing myself to try to live in the present moment and out of my comfort zone.

3. Get married!
Ok, this one is kind of cheating…but this is my list and I can do what I want! After a few months of being engaged, the initial glee (and, frankly, shock) has worn off and I am finally somewhat on track with wedding planning – thank you so much, Mom! I could not be more excited. On a more substantial note, I am also so excited to actually be married to Conrad and start this new chapter of our lives together. I can’t wait!

4. Learn to love my body
This one’s pretty personal, but I think it’s something that everyone can relate to. New Year’s resolutions are full of items like ‘get healthier’, ‘eat better’, ‘lose weight’, etc., but for me, the biggest change I want to see is in my head and my heart. I want to accept and eventually embrace my imperfections, instead of covering them up or making excuses for them. I want wear what I want because I want to wear it, and do what I want because I want to do it! Easier said than done, but I’m working on it.

And that’s about it! What about you? Have you made resolutions, or do you dislike the tradition? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments 🙂

Happy 2015!
