bangkok, 2019: part 1

Hello! I hope you all had a lovely weekend!

To beat the end-of-the-weekend gloom, I cheered myself up by putting together this post, and I have to say, going through these photos did put me in a much better mood! Here’s hoping it cheers up your Sunday as well.

As most of you know, C & I spent ten days in Thailand last year for our annual birthday/escape-November-in-Sweden trip. The year before that we went to Morocco (and yes, I do still plan to blog about this trip, more-than-one-and-a-half-years later 😬) .

Our first stop in Thailand? Bangkok, of course! After a few days in the city, we planned to take a bus south to Trat, where we were going to catch a boat to the island of Koh Mak. After four days of escaping reality, we’d end the trip with another couple of days in Bangkok before heading back home.

Our trip began, as most do, with a loooong flight…

And, true to form, Conrad was not hiding his feelings about being in confined spaces AT ALL lol. About 17 hours later, we landed at Suvarnabhumi Airport, and after a two-hour cab ride into town (with the grumpiest driver I’ve ever had) we arrived at our adorable B&B in Chinatown. After showers + a quick nap, we ventured out, starving and more than ready to stretch our legs.

To our delight, we discovered a fabulous street food market about 5m away from our B&B. C had his first real phad thai, and I ate a hot noodle soup that I ordered using mostly pointing and hand gestures to an old Thai woman who basically shushed me and told me to sit down. I’m not sure exactly what she served me, (and I was too hungry to take a picture!) but it was one of the best things I’d ever eaten.

The next day, we headed downtown for some shopping and sightseeing, diet-caffeinated-beverages in tow 😉.

Shopping in Thailand is a must-do (and you guys know my feelings about shopping, haha). While I barely got myself anything (I splurged instead on food and massages!!), C and I had so much fun searching for christmas stocking stuffers and gifts for family and friends.

That evening (Conrad’s birthday!) we ate fried rice and drank Chang from cold bottles, sitting on plastic stools at our friendly neighborhood street market once more. After, we took a stroll around the block and fell upon a cocktail bar nearby with live music.

Turns out the live music was a local ABBA cover band (!!!), and they played all of their best hits. In no time, the dance floor was packed with sweaty disco-enthusiasts, myself included.

Happy birthday my love! ❤️

The next day, after a delicious breakfast offered by our B&B, we went out once more in search of what Bangkok had to offer, including 120-minute full-body massages for less than $10, tom yam pizza (to DIE for), getting lost on the Skytrain walkway downtown, and somehow ending up in Lumpini Park at sunset during what looked like some kind of charity race.

We ended up right by the Patpong night market (of the infamous ‘ping pong’ shows) as it was being set up for the night, which was pretty interesting to see. Finally, totally exhausted, we hailed a cab and went home to pack and sleep.

The next day, we woke up bright and early and ready for our journey to Koh Mak!

To be continued…
